The Beginning of Your Journey

Your adventure will start at Marshfield Base Station when you drive up Base Station Road. Steeped in history, the station was previously a point of transfer from stagecoaches to the Cog, transporting guests to hotels that were located at the summit in the 1800s.

Today’s visitors to the Base Station can stroll through the gift shop, explore a hands-on experience at the state-of-the-art museum, or enjoy a drink at the Peppersass Bar & Restaurant while watching the busy train operations before they climb the mountain.

The Cog Railway Museum

This free museum boasts historic displays and state-of-the-art interactive exhibitions. Ever wanted to engineer a Mount Washington Cog Railway diesel engine? You can with our train simulator, and you and your family can take a picture on a slide board and learn all about the experience!

The onsite gift shop offers a mix of memorable gifts including toys, souvenirs, books, and apparel, but also provides an opportunity to satisfy your sweet tooth with plenty of unique sweets and maple products that are produced by the owner’s family.

Before or after your trip, take a visit to Peppersass Pond to enjoy scenic views of the surrounding area and feed the hungry fish!

Mount Washington Summit

Mount Washington is the highest peak in the northeastern part of the country. Because of this, grand views are offered that are unequaled by any other mountain on the east coast.

The weather on Mount Washington is known for changing very quickly, so be prepared. You may be greeted by fantastic views or a voyage into the mist and out again!  Take the short walk to the Summit marker to take a memory-worthy family photo on top of the world!
