Spay & Neuter Program

Each year, in this country, millions of healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are killed because there are not enough homes for them all. Get your pet spayed or neutered, so your pet doesn’t add to those statistics.

Since 2002, CCLAS has spent over $20,000 helping owners to spay or neuter their pets. We believe this is the one, most important thing we can do to help curb the overpopulation of cats and dogs in our communities. For every animal adopted from the Lakewood Animal Shelter, the new owner gets a certificate giving a discount, up to $75, to have that pet spayed or neutered.

Below is a list of like-minded veterinarians and animal clinics who provide low-cost procedures.

Why should I get my pet spayed or neutered?

Spaying (removing the ovaries and uterus in a female) and neutering (removing the testicles in a male) are veterinary procedures using general anesthesia, and only requiring minimal hospitalization. You can prevent the death of millions of animals by being a responsible caretaker and scheduling an appointment with your vet to have your pet spayed or neutered.

A sterilized animal lives a healthier life. The simple medical procedure can help prevent testicular cancer in males, and pyometra (a disease of the uterus most commonly seen in female dogs, but also seen in female cats) and breast cancer in females.

A spayed or neutered animal makes a better, more behaved pet. Males are less likely to roam, engage in fighting, spray urine to mark their territory, and embarrass you by inappropriate sexual mounting. Females will not go into heat, which usually makes them urinate frequently and yowl all night to attract males.
